India 2012

I am just back from 3 weeks in Rajhastan and Benares.  I did a number of water-colour sketches, working on a theory of reductiontism, and memory, from which I intend to make a few paintings, and to try to recreate some of the sensations of colour I felt:  here are some 'Lotus Cafe, Benares', Kolyat, Floating Palace, Udiaphur, all oil on canvas around 110x90cms

and here are some of the photographs I took:

Somerset Levels Floods

In the summer this year, there were floods, and the countryside returned to how it must have been in the middle ages, when boats punted around the landscape, as far east as Pilton.  Godney, as a name means God's - ney(island). Our neighbouring farmers' land was as the sea.  This is a partner picture for 'Putting Godney on the Map' both 163cms x 131cms, oil on canvas.

Putting Godney on the Map

Putting Godney on the Map

I seem to want to do landscape for the first time. I am really interested in the wonderful ordinariness of our riverside village, with its de-consecrated church. there is so much rain this year, so much bad weather and storms, and I am trying to capture that. And now, on Augsust 7th, I have changed this image quite a lot, incorporating the unease of distorted images

THE JUBILEE LINE

spotted in a newspaper a few months ago  I have been making a series of images of people on public transport (Jean Martin Contemplates her Life and the Lonely Passion of Judith Hearne).  I want to make the Queen as pink and glowing as possible.  here she is about 120cms x 90cms on aluminium.

THE TAILOR OF BANGLADESH

This elderly lady's photograph was advertising the fact that for £1 you could give a Bangladeshi back their sight with cataract surgery.   She reminded me very much of my 'The Jubilee Line', and I see her as a companion to her - a contrast in what life offers, and what money can buy.  Here she is about 120cms x 90cms on aluminium.

Pontormo Head

I am at the start of a learning curve, trying to analyse the incredible clarity of the original.

from Pontormo's 'Deposition from the Cross' Santa Felicita, Florence

I love the candy colours and light in this, and his fantastic composition:  this is another painting on the way.
